Proficiency Requirements


Junior Activity participants from Under 8’s to Under 14’s shall successfully complete an assessment in the following:

*    A preliminary evaluation before entering the surf.

*    A run-swim-run before competing at carnivals and before doing water activities on Sunday mornings.

*    A timed ‘pool swim’ before competing at carnivals and before doing water activities on Sunday mornings.

N.B. Woolgoolga Pool graciously allows us use of their pool for proficiency purposes. Two free entries are allowed and any subsequent proficiency tests will be charged the normal entry fee.  If you find your child is just missing out with their proficiency times you may consider undergoing ‘stroke correction’ lessons at the pool.

Preliminary Evaluation:-        

To be undertaken prior to commencing any Junior Activities on Sunday mornings.

Under 10’s 25m   (freestyle) 1.5 minutes
Under 11’s 50m   (freestyle) 2 minutes
Under 12’s 100m (freestyle) 2 minutes
Under 13’s 150m (freestyle)  3 minutes
Under 14’s 200m (freestyle) 3 minutes

N.B.  A club official shall supervise the preliminary evaluation, training officer or a Board of Examiner member.

Timed Pool Swim

*All children wishing to compete in water events at carnivals shall complete the following pool swims:

Under 8's Nil  
Under 9’s & 10’s 200 mtrs 6 minutes
Under 11’s & 12’s 200 mtrs  5 minutes
Under 13’s to 14’s 200 mtrs 5 minutes

N.B. A Club official will supervise the pool swim.  The preliminary evaluation is NOT necessary if the timed pool swim has been successfully completed.  To maintain safety in the surf and to be eligible to compete at carnivals the Run Swim Run and Timed Pool swim must be completed.  A child shall not be considered for water-based events on a Sunday if he or she is non-proficient.

SURF EDUCATION PROGRAM:

Members are exposed to a variety of education activities throughout their age groups that are designed to develop; surf awareness, surf survival skills, basic rescue and resuscitation procedures.  At the completion of each phase a Certificate is awarded which culminates with the Under 14’s completing their Surf Rescue Certificate and being able to participate in surf patrols.
